Canexus has been a key regional producer of caustic soda in the Western Canada and the US Pacific Northwest since 1957. Our chlor-alkali plant at North Vancouver , B.C. was originally built to serve the needs of the Canadian pulp & paper industry. Since that time we have broadened our customer base to include oil refineries and chemical plants.

The largest portion of our caustic soda is used in the pulp & paper industry to prepare and bleach wood pulp. It is an essential component in the kraft pulping process in which wood is chemically digested to produce wood pulp. Caustic is used in the bleaching process to neutralize bleached pulp and to extract colour residues from the bleached pulp. Bleached pulp is subsequently used in the production of printing & writing papers and packaging for food and consumer goods.

There are also applications for caustic soda in oil refineries where it is used to scrub stack emissions in pollution abatement applications. Canexus also supplies various other users such as steel producers and chemical plants and bleach producers.
